Before you can start learning how to build a homemade wind turbine, you should obtain a motor from the treadmill. These are generally useful as an external source to generate electricity. There are easy finds in dumpsters which are near colleges especially during the spring time. There are also online sources where you can auction off these old treadmill motors.

Start welding the motor centered onto the axle of a bicycle pedal with the pedal removed. Be keen on having the motor in mounted in place by welding the pipe in order to bridge the area from the frame to the motor housing. This holds the motor to avoid spinning together with the motor.

The blades can be made up of the plastic bottles that are zip tied at an angle in order for them to spin as the wind blows. Make sure that there should be an area of the face of the wheel that is covered with blades so that the wind would be able to push it as it blows. Shape the blades so that they won't cut anything as they are spinning. You can remove the rest of the bike to be able to save up space or add aesthetics.

It is quite simple how to build a homemade wind turbine. Just remember to mount the generator on a high position as much as possible. Avoid hooking the battery to the generator without checking with an electrician first. This is to avoid overcharging and running the motor instead of charging it.
