Features To Look For When Buying A Portable Generator

More and more people are realizing the benefits of having a portable generator ready for those times when the power goes out, or for times when having a portable source of power is a must, such as camping. With advances in technology, even small portable generators are able to generate sufficient power to supply a number of appliances at a reasonable cost. However, when choosing a portable generator to buy there are a number of features that you need to consider to make sure you get the right generator for your needs. I will look at the most important features that you should look at when buying a new or used portable generator for sale.

Older style portable generators use rope pull starters, like lawn mowers. This can be awkward and if the motor does not start can be back breaking work. Therefore, look for a generator with an electric starter. This will save a lot of effort and should ensure an easy start when you need it.

Look for a portable generator with an inverter feature.  An inverter allows the generator to scale back if appliances are not drawing fully on the power output. This saves on fuel costs, reduces noise, reduces maintenance required and prolongs the life of the motor.

Next, look for a generator that uses a brushless alternator.  Rather than going into the ins and outs of what an alternator does and why it does or does not use brushes, just remember that brushes are moving parts that wear out. They need to be replaced. Therefore, if you can get a portable generator that does not require brushes, that is a definite advantage.

Next, look for an automatic shut down if the oil level drops below the critical level. Generators use oil and if you forget to top up oil levels, the motor could cease. This usually means the motor needs to be replaced. That is an expensive mistake. As generators don't get used all that regularly, it is easy to forget to top up oil, and when you need to use them, it is usually in an emergency, such as when the power goes out, so the last thing you will be thinking of is oil levels. Therefore, an automatic cut off is an important feature.

It is an advantage if the generator can output 12 volts as well as 240 volts. Many smaller size motors use 120 volts.

A basic feature, but an important one, is a large fuel tank. This may not seem like a major issue, but if you need the generator to be used over extended periods of time without constantly checking on it, the larger the fuel tank, the better.

Finally, look for a generator with a brand name motor with a long warranty. Warranties are important to give you that piece of mind in case something goes wrong.

These are a few of the most important features you need to consider when buying a new or used portable generator. Follow these guidelines and you should end up buying a generator that will serve you well.
