Everyday you cook your food on your burners or bake your tasty deserts on your oven. You may even enjoy eating outdoors by cooking through grillers in your backyard. All of us have different options in order to cook our meals. In addition, it is undeniable that it cannot be done without gas and fire.
The kind of gas that makes it possible for us to create a small fire for cooking is what we call a natural gas. The most important content of these gases is methane. There are also gases such as propane gas that is used as heat sources in mobile homes and camping. All of these gases are very flammable. However, they are better used for domestic activities because they are cheaper and compressible. In addition, they are non-toxic. Despite all these advantages of using these kinds of gases, it does not eliminate the dangers that it can produce. A small leak in the tank can cause explosions or fire that is triggered by a small spark. It is even more dangerous when your kitchen is well ventilated.
Therefore, there are safety devices that you can use in case of fire occurring from these gases. By nature, these gases are odorless and colorless. Propane is heavier therefore, it poses a great risk for explosions whereas natural gas is lighter and easily dissipates on air. In cases of fire started by these gases, dry powder extinguishers are effective.
How to use them
Before using the device, it is better to shut down all sources of gas. If the fire is not as big as you imagined and can be controlled, take time to remove all combustible materials that can worsen the flames. Once done, take this take the device and pull the pin. Make sure you keep distance from area of fire. After observing proper distance, aim at the fire and squeeze the nozzle. The best way to put it out is to aim at the base so that fire will not re-ignite, especially in the case of propane gas. If the fire is controlled, evacuate the building and make sure to seek help for inspection.
Things to remember
Gas can easily dissipate than liquid. Therefore, you have to use your better judgment in knowing when to fight or fly. Your goal in cases of fire caused by these gases is safety: not the safety of your valuables but to yourself. Do not play hero if you can sense that the fire is uncontrollable. You need to evacuate the area first. Your dry powder extinguisher can only do so much. It will serve as you first line defense for small-scale fires. However, leave it to the professionals in stopping big scale fires. That is why no matter what happens in cases of incidence like this, controlled fire or not, call the fire department without any delays.
Exposures to natural gas and propane may have harmful effects to your body. Therefore, once you have smelled it, identify the source and turn it off. Do not wait to smell smoke before you take actions.
