Generating Electricity to Save Money – Components of Your Magnetic Power System

So you’ve decided to start generating electricity at home and save huge amounts of money on your electrical bill.  You’ve also decided to construct your own magnetic power generator using a detailed step-by-step guide.  Now you need to add the equipment that will make an electrical system for your home.  Here I will discuss the main pieces of equipment needed so you can become your own power company and slash your energy bills to zero.

Charge Controllers

The very first piece of equipment you will need is a charge controller.  These devices regulate the flow of current coming from your magnetic power generator.  You are making gobs of energy from your generator and now you need a way to usefully control it.  If you are feeding the batteries with too much current then you can damage them permanently, thus the need for some type of control.  Depending upon the size of your magnetic power generator it may put out anywhere from 5 to 60 or more volts of DC to the batteries, so a way to regulate this evenly is needed.  Charge controllers come in the static fixed size type, and the more expensive MPPT which can vary the voltage output to your system.

Batteries

If you are you using an off grid system, i.e. not a grid-tie system, you need batteries to store all the energy your magnetic power system is making for you.  This is how you save money on your utility bill.  You are going to need a bank of batteries tied in series or parallel that matches the voltage of your power inverter.  The type of battery required is called a deep cycle battery, which is designed to handle repeated discharges and recharges over many years of service.  Often times these batteries are called “marine” or “golf cart” and come in voltages of 6 to 12.  The most common types of deep cycle batteries used are acid lead, gel, and absorbed glass matte (AGM).   

Power inverters

Lastly, you will need a way to convert the DC voltage from the battery bank to usable AC for your home.  This is done using a piece of equipment called a power inverter.  The inverter is sized in watts for your design load, and matches the input voltage of your system.  The proper design load is a better saved for another article, but know now that is the most important piece of the system design.  The output wattage for an inverter can be anywhere from 50W all the way to 3,000W and more.  Input voltages are usually 12 or 24 volts, but can go up to 48 volts or higher.  It is important to match your power inverter to the correct input voltage and design load for your particular system
