Generator Light Bicycle

Electric generators are power converters that transform heat energy to electric energy. The theory behind a generator is that difference of a magnetic field over a loop of wire generates a current throughout the wire. You could build an electric generator making use of some available parts.

Step #1

Know the energy source that you like to convert to electric energy. You could use, for instance, a bicycle, water wheel or practically anything with a rotating pin.

Step #2

Loop a length of cable to make a reasonable sized coil with the 2 wire ends available. The bigger the count of turns in the coil, the more electric energy you could generate.

Step #5

Attach the magnets on the coil so that the loop could freely rotate between them. Also, ensure that you attach the magnets to maximize the strength of the field. For instance, you could do this by making the south part of a magnet face the north part of another.

Step #6

Attach the 2 conductors on the source of energy to a battery, circuit or device, as needed. Like Step #3, this step might need some mechanical and electrical ingenuity.

Step #7

Turn on your source of energy. This might be as easy as getting on the bicycle and stepping on the pedals.

Tips

The electric voltage magnitude that you generate from your generator depends on factors as the number and size of turns in the coil, the strength of magnetic field, the speed of coil rotation and the electrical connections quality.

This kind of generator generates AC or Alternating Current electricity at an occurrence that is determined by the rotation rate of the loop.

Warnings

Ensure that the wire connections in Steps #3 and Step #6 don't make any short circuit. That's, there must be no electrical relation between the 2 wire ends, except the loop. This is the difficult part of the design.

You could make any voltage you desire, depending on how you create the generator. So, you should be careful as electricity could be deadly or lethal. Do not connect your power generator to any device or battery until you are sure of both the voltage level that you'll produce and whether you should design any circuitry as a line.
