With the ever increasing cost of gasoline prices, car manufacturers are having to work overtime to cost effectively improve gas mileage, while still meeting the rigid emission requirements of today with gas engines.

One of the most promising ways to improve gas mileage is to add hydrogen to the fuel/air mixture in the engine. Because hydrogen isn't available at the local gasoline station, selling a hydrogen boosted gasoline engine wasn't on the catalog of engines - till now.

A higher cost and environmental advantage to hydrogen boosted gas engines are low amounts of nitrogen oxide emission gas, which will totally eliminate the need for external nitrogen oxide emissions control. Currently, nitrogen oxide emissions control is a major cost problem for diesel engines which use high priced traps to meet the emission standards. Diesel engines emit particles that must be collected by a filter that should be changed periodically.

Hydrogen boosted engines on the other hand need neither nitrogen oxide or particulate control and need only a low cost oxidation catalyst to control very small amounts of exhaust which is formed mostly while the engine starting up and warming up, to improve gas mileage. Added cuts in emissions control requirements origin from the engine's capability to use only the clean hydrogen enriched load during the cold start phase when 90% of emissions are generated in the emission test.

The hydrogen boost system is effectively a bolt on technology that can be added to a currentcar's engine compartment. According to those developing the project, the cost of the device is less than half of the added cost for diesel.

Prototype hydrogen boosted engines are now being installed in test SUV vehicles that have sufficient space for the system. Four cylinder gasoline engines will probably be the immediate candidates for the technology as high gas prices continue to produce competition among the higher fuel economy models that seek MPG leadership.

With gas prices getting higher and higher, hydrogen boosted gas engines offer you the chance improve gas mileage and not have to worry about burning up all of your fuel. A hydrogen boosted engine can increase engine efficiency by 20-30%. Instead of having to go out and buy a diesel to preserve fuel, hydrogen boosted units will help you conserve gas. Although they aren't available to buy right now, they will be very soon. Many auto makers are looking into them, as they offer gas engines something like never before.
