How to Build a Homemade Wind Generator
The decision by many homeowners to build a home wind generator is usually prompted by how much it would cost to buy a commercially available system and have it professionally installed. Models that are designed to generate 1000 watts of power can cost more than $2500, a price that is usually prohibitive for most middle-class homeowners. When a homeowner realizes that it is possible to build a homemade wind generator for around $200, the do-it-yourself urge begins to kick in. They are not complicated devices, usually made up of four major sub-systems: the rotor assembly (hub and blades), the body, the tail, and the tower. The rotor assembly, the hub and blades that convert the wind power to electrical energy, can be purchased at low cost over the Internet. The tail, which ensures that the rotor assembly is always facing into the wind, can be cut from wood or plastic. The tower can be fabricated from an old flagpole. All of these components are inexpensive, and some can be obtained from local salvage yards.
