As always happens this time of year, homeowners and renters alike are dreading the astronomical heating bills. The worst hit will be in the northeast where a number of people still use coal oil and propane for heating their homes. The average bill for oil customers will be somewhere around $2225, up 14.5% from last year, while the same demographic that uses propane will pay a few hundred more. This is for the 6 month period between October 1st and March 31st, as estimated by the experts.

There ARE things that you can do to minimize your heating bill.

The first would be to buy a programmable thermostat and then be wise about how you program it. Even changing the interior temperature by one degree up or down can result in a 5-10% energy savings. On a $300.00 bill that equates to $15 to $30 a month, over a 12 month period; that is $180 to $300 a year. Just try lowering your temperature by one degree and see what the difference is. If you get used to that easily, then do it by 2 degrees and so on. People DO get used to it pretty easily without suffering and you can always toss on a sweater or a robe. Now, if your hands are so cold they are freezing on the keyboard, you should probably raise the temperature to a more acceptable level. Also program it lower for those periods of time when you are not at home. For example, if both of you work, have it lower at the time that you leave the house, but no more than 5 degrees, otherwise it takes too long to warm it back up again. Then, set the thermostat to raise about an hour before you come home. Do the same thing while you are sleeping and bundle on the blankets. Then set the thermostat to raise the temperature about an hour before you get out of bed so that you are not taking your morning shower and shivering through the whole experience.

Check with your utility company. Some companies offer free programmable thermostats as an incentive for community energy savings. You also may want to find if there is more than one Power Company in your area. Compare rates. They are not all created equal and you can realize considerable savings if you go with the "other" guy.

Next...winterize your home! The cracks and spaces around windows and doors are the biggest culprits for the energy drain. A little caulk goes a long ways towards weatherproofing your home and saving energy dollars year round. (It also helps to keep out the creepy crawlies that can squeeze through those little spaces.) Use weather stripping around doors and fix those thresholds if there has been some settling. If you aren't sure how, just ask the helpful people at Lowe's, Home Depot or Ace, or you can even search for it online and find step-by-step instructions.

Some experts suggest using space heaters, but you have to use them wisely. If you want to keep your whole house cooler and there is only the pair of you, then do that and use the space heater in the room that you happen to hang out in. You can even move it from living room to bedroom and then to the bathroom in the morning, but don't use an old space heater. The newer space heaters are much more energy efficient and have better safety aspects built into them. I would not recommend using space heaters in the rooms of small children and stay away from propane or kerosene heaters which can cause carbon-monoxide poisoning.

You can also make much bigger improvements to your home, like energy-saving appliances, furnaces and water heaters, or zone heating if you have a large, or multi-story house. For example, if you have a two-story home, the upper story will almost always be warmer. If you have a basement, it will be cooler than the main floor. Having zone heating will allow you to independently control the temperature on each floor which means that it will cost less to heat your upper floors than it will cost to heat your basement, which may not need heating anyway, except if you have guests or when hosting a party. Get the picture? Big savings can come as a result of zone heating. Also, if you made these improvements during 2009 or by December 31, 2010, you are eligible for a credit up to 30%, or $1500, on your taxes.

The energy tax credits will end this year though, so if you are going to do it, do it quickly. But, even when the tax credits disappear, you will not lose out by making these energy saving changes. Not only will they save you energy dollars, they will also increase the value of your home, making it much more attractive and easier to sell.

You are not without resources or weapons for saving energy; therefore saving money. Some utility companies even offer a home review where they come in and make recommendations on where you could save the largest amounts of money on your home heating/cooling bill. A search on the internet will turn up thousands of suggestions, everything from outlet insulators to spray-in attic insulation to using heavy, insulated curtains.
