Understanding key terms and lingo will help you out a lot when you are at the track. Imagine how horrible it would be, not to mention embarrassing, to be in a conversation where you are lost because you simply do not understand the terms being used.
Well, don't fear. Here is a short horse racing glossary to get you started. It covers the more typically things you will here at the track. Once you read through this, you should be able to talk with the best of them at the track.
A
Across the Board: Bet placed on a horse to win, place, or show.
All out: A horse that has extended himself to the extreme.
Apprentice: A rider who has not ridden a certain number of winners.
B
Backstretch: The far side of the track between turns.
Bell: Sound that signals start of race or close of betting.
Board: The display for betting information.
Bridge Jumper: Someone who makes a large bet on a favorite.
C
Call: Running position of horses.
Chute: Backstretch extension that allows for a straightway run.
Classic: A traditionally important race.
D
Daily double: Wager on selection of winners for two consecutive races.
Dwelt: Horse late out of the gate.
E
Exacta: Wager choosing first two finishers of race in order.
Extended: Horse being forced to run at top speed.
F
Field: Horses set to run in a race.
Flag: Used to signify the start of the race when it is dropped.
Front Runner: Horse who leads or attempts to lead in the race.
G
Gait: How a horse moves.
H
Hand: Equivalent to a four inches measurement. Used to measure horse height.
Handle: Money total wagered on a race.
Head of the stretch: The start of the run home.
Hurdle race: A race including obstacles.
I
In the money: A first, second or third place finish.
L
Late double: Second daily double late in the program.
Leakey roof circuit - Minor track races.
M
Minus pool: A pool in which a horse is played too heavily causing a deficit in the money left to pay out.
Money rider: A rider who is on the board in rich races.
Morning line: Odds quoted before wagering.
O
Odds on: Odds of less than even.
Off track betting: Betting taking place at betting office off track.
On the board: A finish in the first four.
On the nose: Person betting only on the winner of race.
Overlay: Horse going at higher price that earned through past performance.
Overnight line: Quote of prices the night before race.
Overnight race: Closing time is specific number of hours before race.
P
Pick six: Wager where winners of all races must be picked.
Place bet: To wager on a horse to finish first or second.
Pool: Total bet on race.
Purse: Prize money to be won.
Q
Quinella: Wager of pick of first and second place; does not have to be in order of finish.
S
Show: Horse that places third.
Show bet: Bet placed on third place finisher.
Simulcast: Race televised to different locations.
Stakes placed: Horse that finishes first, second or third in a stakes race.
Stake: Race where owner pays fee for horse to run.
T
Totalisator: Bet machine that record tickets and shows odds.
Tout: Person who gives racing tips.
Trifecta: Wager of first, second and third place finishers; must be in order.
Triple Crown: Important and famous races; Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes.
W
Winner takes all: Winner gets the purse or stakes for the race.
