How To Keep The Lights On With An Emergency Generator

How many times has it happened to you?  A big snow storm arrives, or an unexpected spring ice storm that brings down the power lines and you find yourself without electricity.  Short outages can be annoying.  Long outages can be down right expensive.  Today with aging infrastructure and uncertain weather patterns, more and more homeowners are turning to emergency generators to insure that they will have at least enough electricity to power essential appliances.

But what do you look for in a generator?  This isn't something that you buy everyday and you are going to have to depend in large part on the person who's trying to sell it to you.  Wouldn't it be nice to at least understand the basics before you go shopping?  Hopefully you'll find those essential tidbits of information in this article.

There are two types of "emergency" generators available.  Standby generators are permanent installations and usually run off of natural gas.  These units will automatically kick in when they sense that normal power has been disrupted.  Usually they will have a self test feature that will fire up the unit periodically to insure that it is functioning correctly.

These units aren't cheap.  Installed they can run up to $12,000.  On the other hand they become a permanent part of the house adding to its overall value.  These make sense for those who experience frequent outages and become almost required if you have someone in the home that relies on electrically run medical devices like a respirator.

Portable generators are just that.  You can store them in your garage and roll them out for hook up when you need them.  They are gas powered which means you are also going to have to find a safe method for storing sufficient fuel.

The next question is how powerful a generator you should buy.  To determine this you need to go to every appliance that you want powered and read the label to get the wattage.  You're not going to be able to power the entire house but you do want the furnace, refrigerator freezer, stove, TV, computer, sump pump, and a lamp or two to have juice.  Add up the total wattage of these appliances then tack on 10% more as a safety margin and you will have the size generator you need.

Here's another helpful tip.  If an appliance that you want to power doesn't show the wattage but shows the amps required, you can convert the amps to watts by multiplying the amps times 110.

So now you know the different generators available and how to calculate your power needs.  Find a reliable dealer and you are on your way to a blackout free home.
